Rome is one of the best cities to tour while in Europe because you can never run out of sight seeing places while here. The places to see include architectural ruins, piazzas, medieval era churches, museums and many more.
You can take a walk through the courts of various piazzas such as Piazza Navona, Piazza della Rotonda, Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Farnese. Many of these piazzas have churches and fountains. The Piazza Colonna is home to the column of Aurelius and Chigi and is also the place where the Italian Government meets. If you want to see one of Bernini’s greatest works, visit the Piazza della Minerva for a spectacular view of his elephant statue. The lovely fountain by Bernini can be found at the Piazza Barberini.
The Domus Aurea by Nero is an interesting place to visit. It is said that Nero burnt a big chunk of Rome to build this magnificent underground palace. You will find this famous palace directly beneath the Trajan Baths ruins. The church of Santa Maria is another must visit mythological site.
Other sight seeing areas are the old Rome, where you can find the architectural remains of that mediaeval civilization. You can visit the ruins of the Circus of Maxentius, the Villa dei Quintili, the Flavian Palace and the tomb of Cecilia. The baths of Diocletian houses several museums, some of which have collections of some of the most famous Roman sculptures. You cannot go to Rome without a visit to the world’s most famous church – St. Peter’s basilica. Other ancient and modern churches that you might want to see include the Sistine chapel, St. John in Lateran and Santa Maria Maggiore.
If you do not want to mingle with the rest of the touring crowd, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city from the Janiculum, Giancolo, Aventine as well as Pincio hills. These hills are the best view points available since Rome does not have tall buildings. The Parco Savelo is also a good viewpoint. The environment around this place is conducive for a family outing and picnic. Nature lovers can enjoy themselves in the Zoomarine which is home to a good number of aquatic creatures such as sea lions, dolphins and exotic birds.
Ensure that you get a travel guide whenever you want to go sight seeing in Rome. This will make it so much easier to find interesting sites and attractions.
